Is the Keystone XL Pipeline Coming Back?
President DJT wants to see it be built and this would be a major bold move for American refining.
President Donald Trump is wasting no time in his second term, and he’s got his sights set on a familiar target: the Keystone XL Pipeline. On February 24, 2025, he posted on Truth Social, urging the project’s developers to “come back to America” with assurances of “easy approvals” and an “almost immediate start.” It’s a decisive call to action—reigniting a vision of energy supremacy, job creation, and a rejection of the timid policies that derailed it last time. Trump didn’t mince words, condemning Biden’s 2021 cancellation as an unjust blow to TC Energy, the firm that dared to invest in America’s future, and extending an open invitation to them (or any capable company) to step up and build.
I’ve covered this story before. In my article last year, I explored how Trump first approved Keystone XL in 2017, overturning years of Obama-era indecision to deliver a win for American energy. It was a triumphant moment—until President Biden, mere hours into his term, revoked the permit under the guise of climate concerns, sidelining jobs and security in the process. I posed the question then: Was Keystone XL the economic and strategic powerhouse its supporters claimed? The evidence pointed to yes… jobs, oil, and a fortified America were all within reach, despite detractors’ efforts to cloud the issue.
Now the President is reinforcing that case with gusto. “We want the Keystone XL Pipeline built!” he declared, casting Biden’s decision as a capitulation to environmental extremists at the expense of American interests. He’s offering TC Energy, or any willing player, a clear path forward, and the timing couldn’t be better. American refineries, particularly in the Midwest and Gulf Coast, are tailor-made to process the heavy sour crude Keystone XL would deliver. Canada already supplies over 4 million barrels a day, more than ~60% of our crude imports, much of it thick oil from Alberta’s oil sands. Our facilities have been equipped for decades to handle this grade, a strategic choice from when domestic production waned and we turned to allies like Canada. Keystone XL’s 800,000-plus barrels daily would flow seamlessly into this system, powering our refineries and bolstering energy independence.
This isn’t a fluke… it’s a testament to American ingenuity. Refineries across states like Illinois and Texas have invested heavily in technology to refine heavy crude, making Canada our top supplier by a wide margin over distant players like Saudi Arabia. Biden’s cancellation disrupted this synergy, but Trump’s pledge to revive Keystone XL promises to restore it. With a Republican-led Congress, his “easy approvals” carry real weight. TC Energy abandoned the project in 2021 after Biden’s reversal, but Trump’s extending a hand. Will they seize it, or will another American company rise to the challenge?
American pipelines, like those envisioned for Keystone XL, are among the safest and most reliable systems in the world for transporting crude oil and natural gas, ensuring safety, energy security, and environmental stewardship.
This is about more than a single pipeline; it’s about reclaiming America’s energy might. Keystone XL means fuel for our refineries, jobs for our workers, and a reduced reliance on foreign oil peddlers. I talked about the critics’ objections in my prior piece, but Trump’s cutting through the noise: this is about strength, not surrender. Our refineries are primed for Canadian crude, and Keystone XL is the conduit to deliver it. Let the detractors grumble—America thrives on action, not hesitation.
