Also, will this help in regard to the recycling of the lithium batteries at end of useful life, or will that still be a very expensive task?
I think potential surface water or ground water contamination is what could be a big issue with any lithium refining due to toxicity of metals. My main concern with any lithium mining outside of the USA (Australia, South America, China) is the lack of safety regulations or environmental legislation.
The new Tesla refinery in Texas is supposedly going to be able to process recycled batteries and manufacturing scraps. I’ll certainly keep an eye on these developments and appreciate the idea!
